The Oprah’s Lifeclass course for Brené Brown’s The Gifts of Imperfection carried high expectations due to Brené’s influence and the deep personal impact of her work. The challenge was to design a structured yet approachable digital experience that guided participants through a series of creative self-reflection activities, aligning with TV episodes featuring interviews and audience discussions.
A key hurdle was engagement without pressure—unlike traditional courses, there were no grades or deadlines. Instead, we needed to motivate users to complete each activity on their own time, emphasizing personal fulfillment rather than assessment. Activities ranged from collages, drawings, mood boards, and other creative exercises using simple household items, encouraging participants—many of whom had not engaged in creative expression since childhood—to explore new ways of self-validation and emotional processing.
From a UI/UX perspective, the platform had to be clear, inviting, and non-intimidating, ensuring users could easily navigate between episodes, track their progress, and revisit past exercises. Familiar structures like episode-based organization, itemized material lists, and step-by-step instructions helped create an intuitive experience. The ultimate goal was to translate deep emotional work into an engaging, accessible, and repeatable process, fostering both participation and self-discovery without overwhelming the user.
